Development and application of an efficient continuous module for ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction

Abstract

Rapidly growing market of natural extracts demands advanced technological solutions that are versatile, flexible, safe, efficient, and robust. Ultrasound application in FoodTech industry achieved vast application due to its safety, simplicity, and high efficiency. Solvent extraction boosted with ultrasound was proved to have higher efficiency and decreased processing time. Due to sound attenuation in liquid media, scale-up of ultrasound-assisted extractor is challenging. Therefore, commercially available ultrasound extractors are yet appearing on market and those operate in batch mode.

To verify the efficiency of ultrasound application in natural ingredients extraction, different raw materials and solvents combinations were tested at lab scale using a commercial continuous flow-cell reactor equipped with ultrasonic probe. Optimal operational parameters were found using a systematic design of experiments, in which ultrasound intensity, solid content, solvent composition, residence time, and temperature were varied. The extraction results proved supremacy over analogical tests results achieved with maceration.

Using the lab scale continuous reactor, our research team designed and tested a continuous module for ultrasound-assisted solvent extraction at pilot scale for food processing applications. Leaf and roots materials such as spinach and carrots were processed as test materials in the process unit to assess its performance and efficiency. The optimal operational conditions determined at lab scale were used in pilot scale module to extract chlorophylls and carotenoids from spinach and carrots respectively into aqueous ethanol solution.

Due to shorter processing time compared to commercially available pilot units, even spatial distribution of ultrasound intensity in processed pulp, and higher yield compared to maceration, the developed continuous flow cell module has high potential in food processing area. It can be applied in various processing scenarios such as crop-to-extract, waste-to-product, and solution enrichment to name a few.
