The boom-corridor thinning method is a geometrical
thinning method that enables the growth of renewable energy usage by increasing
young forest management and energy wood gain. The method uses different systematic
patterns to remove the trees. To achieve the desired removal portion, the corridor
dimensions must be selected correspondingly. This can be calculated analytically
by using the portions of thinned and unthinned areas. A simulation model was developed
to test different dimensions, patterns, and forest structures that affect the
removal portions. The analytically calculated portions and the simulation model
removal portions were congruent with each other. The simulation model result had
irregulations that did show stand geometry affecting removal portions. Mostly
these were small and would average out in a bigger area. The Results show the
validity of the simulation model and a possibility to use an equation or a pre-calculated
table to estimate the removal portions for boom-corridor thinning.
