Abstract

Ultra-high-strength steels (UHSS) and robotized arc MAG welding are nowadays being widely used in the arctic offshore construction industry. Welding in the arctic environment requires that the welding torch and welding arc keep a certain heat density input into the welding pool because of the relatively low environmental temperature. During these welding processes, the filler material is one key aspect related to maintaining the quality properties of weld seams in the low atmospheric temperature. This research aims to examine the quality of seams welded with a new type of nano-coated filler wire used in robotized MAG welding by different laboratory analysis methods on the S960QC material. The research methods are literature review, laboratory welding processes, destructive tests (tensile strength, impact test, hardness test, and micro and macro structure analyses), and data analysis. All the data collected from the laboratory tests will be analyzed in this paper. The research result will illustrate the advantages of the nanoparticles included in the filler wire coating, i.e., the function of heat concentration. The research result will help filler wire manufacturers to optimize their production processes and the arctic environment offshore construction industries to use the right data to select their welding filler materials.
