System dynamics model for determining the recycled material level in usage stock

Abstract

Sustainable management of the flow of non-renewable resources has been a requirement and a challenge at the same time. Recycling is currently the trending approach to decrease the use of virgin material. Previous research presented different methodologies such as MFA and LCA to visualize the flow of materials. This paper aims to introduce the system dynamics concept to determine the level of recycled material at the usage level by taking phosphorus as a case. A model was built using VENSIM PLE software. Results show that an average of 37.5% occupying the Usage stock comes from recycling, the rest comes from virgin material and imports of final products.
