During a possible loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) a large amount of non-condensable(nitrogen) and condensable (steam) gas is blown from the upper drywell of the containment tothe condensation pool through the blowdown pipes at the boiling water reactors (BWRs). Thewetwell pool serves as the major heat sink for condensation of steam. The blowdown causesboth dynamic and structural loads to the condensation pool. There might also be a risk that thegas discharging to the pool could push its way to the emergency core cooling systems (ECCS)and undermine their performance.
