Abstract
Though the link between technological systemarchitectures and buyer-supplier relationships has beenactively studied, no comprehensive frameworkconnecting system structures and componentpurchasing categories exists. We examine thetechnological dependency structures of such systems byadopting the buyer's viewpoint as system assembler andintegrator. We articulate how system dependenciesrelate to switching costs and needs for investments andtechnological expertise in buyer-supplier relationships.By examining the extents and directions of indirect anddirect dependencies at the technological systems level,we are able to identify the purchasing category to whicheach component is most likely to belong. Wedemonstrate our theoretical framework using anempirical example of a technological system from theenergy industry.
