Abstract
Open innovation practices formed a novel set of the companies' human capital characteristics. However, little is known on what specific human capital characteristics are required to adopt certain open innovation activities or to increase company innovation performance. In this paper, using the data of 460 European companies collected by the OI-Net project survey, we are analysing the human capital characteristics required to manage open innovation and distinguish between those characteristics required for various types of open innovation activities, stage of those activities' adoption as well as look at the links with companies' innovation performance. Our results revealed specific human capital characteristics of companies implementing certain open innovation activities compared to those not using open innovation yet and as a direction for future research suggest analysis of organizational capabilities to explore the links between companies' human capital and innovation performance.
