Abstract
Investors, customers and society continually push companies to domore in terms of environmental and societal sustainability. As many of thesupporting structures - academic, political or managerial - to sustainabledevelopment are lagging behind companies have had to venture into uncertaindecisions with insufficient information. We direct our attention to identifyingvalue-reducing elements that are currently missing from sustainability valueevaluation and how these influence on the management of sustainabilityinnovations. We find that the managerial problems surrounding the decision toinvest in sustainability innovation relate to determining opportunity costs anddealing with heightened uncertainties that result from the idiosyncratic natureof sustainability innovation. Eventually we conclude that immaturemanagement practice currently undermines the pursuit for genuinesustainability.
