Currently scholars debate the role of digital
technologies and Industry 4.0 regarding to the transition towards circularity
and achieving sustainability goals. Many researchers believe that these
technologies can accelerate the circularity transition by orchestrating and
governing circular ecosystems. Digital technologies such as Blockchains, Artificial
Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT) connect different actors from
the ecosystem together to enhance circularity trough the transfer of real-time
data and information. These technologies help ecosystem level stakeholders to
share the knowledge on circular solutions, which they have already implemented
in their strategies and innovative business models as well as sharing the challenges
and risks other actors of the ecosystem may face in the same field. However,
the conceptual and empirical literature of circular economy (CE) ecosystem as
well as role of digital technologies is still quite ambiguous. There has been
little exploration on the era of ecosystem architecture and business models in
CE and the understanding of the way such systems are properly orchestrated. In
addition, the role of Industry 4.0 in value creation, growing and expanding the
system is still in need of further research and practical solution investigation.
