Abstract

University-industry collaboration has
been widely acknowledged as a vital source of innovation. Despite a rather long
history, a number of barriers in such collaboration remain, and the ways to
overcome those stay unexplored. The research field particularly calls for studying
the ways to facilitate university-industry collaboration and connect the key stakeholders
of the Triple Helix – university, industry, government – and intermediaries,
which all have very diverse nature. Applying a blend of such research streams
as Institutional Theory, Knowledge-based view of the firm, Human Capital
theory, open innovation, Triple Helix model and Stakeholder Theory – as an
overarching framework, this study proposes several mechanisms for facilitating
university-industry relationships at the various levels of analysis. An
abductive approach and a combination of a survey among Europe-based companies,
series of case studies from Europe and the US allow developing a holistic
theoretical framework along with multiple theoretical and practical
implications.
