Abstract

Recent investigations have revealed remarkable differences in the twinning stress σTW and kinetics of type
I and type II twin boundaries (TBs) in 10M Ni-Mn-Ga martensite. The theory suggests
that the microstructures forming near the movable macro-twinning planes, particular
a-b lamination, determines the σTW in 10M martensite. We
present in the current report σTW measurement for type I and type II highly mobile a-c TBs in Ni50Mn25Ga20Fe5
14M martensite. The experiments were specially designed to avoid modulation or a-b domains in the vicinity of the movable
TBs.
