Abstract


The demands on actuating devices have steadily increased as
technologies continue to develop. Ni-Mn-Ga is a magnetic shape memory (MSM)´alloy that has a unique combination of properties which give
it significant potential as an actuating material for future devices. Most
research on Ni-Mn-Ga has been studying the effects of a uniform magnetic field
when it is applied to a bulk sample of material. This research explores the use
of a focused magnetic field on a specific location of a constrained sample.
This localized actuation of the material allows for a new level of precision
for MSM devices that was not previously possible. These results, coupled with
rapid actuating response time and acceleration, make Ni-Mn-Ga an ideal
candidate for actuating devices, particularly at a microscale.
