Abstract

Purpose - Little research has been done to date on the emergence of a new category of enterprise that engages in increasingly digital entrepreneurship with digitalized value chain activities. Extant literature provides a less consistent picture of exactly how digitalization of the value chain affects the internationalization of companies. Moreover, the existing literature does not give any insight regarding the impact of the degree of value chain digitalization on the degree of internationalization.

Design/methodology/approach - This paper takes an explorative approach based on a review of the extant literature and uses conceptual analysis and research framework to empirically classify Internet-enabled firms.

Findings - We uncover the ways in which internationalizing born-digital companies can be classified according to their so-called degree of digitalization. The more these companies use Internet technologies, the better they can leverage their foreign assets, thereby achieving a higher share of foreign sales with relatively limited foreign assets.

Research implications - Our results thus enrich the knowledge on internationalization, international entrepreneurship, and international marketing to account for companies that are distinctly digitalized across their value chain.

Practical implications - This research provides evidence for companies regarding the use of digitalization of the value chain to facilitate entrepreneurial opportunities and to offer opportunities for rapid, more efficient, and affordable internationalization.

Originality/value - This research tackles the emergence of a novel phenomenon, by analyzing the digitalization of the value chain of the Internet-enabled firms in relationship with the internationalization degree.
