Experimental study of raw diary manure rheology subjected to anaerobic digester

Wastewater management and recycling organic disposals attracted great
interest from economical and sustainable viewpoints. Anaerobic digester
(AD) includes a process of the waste materials conversion into clean and
sustainable biogas that is enriched with methane. Mixing plays key role
in bio-digestion and flud rheology affects mechanical mixing in AD.
Regard to dramatic diversity of all previous studies published to date,
due to various manure origin, it is necessary to investigate manure
characteristics for each application individually. In present work,
viscosity of a dairy farm manure, to be processed in pilot-scale
bioreactor, is studied experimentally and imitated with Xanthan gum
water solution sharing similar rheology of Herschel-Bulkley fluids. The
rheological parameters of several water-based solutions of Xanthan gum
with concentrations ranging 0.1%-1% as well as cattle manure of
different total solid content up to 11.8% are measured experimentally
and compared. The results show that Herschel-Bulkley model is capable to
describe rheological behavior adequately in the solutions. Rheological
characteristics of the solutions are presented.
