Based on survey of 432 European-based
companies we explore the differences and similarities between companies
representing three stages of open innovation (OI) adoption including open
innovation non-adopters. We assume that the organizational capabilities
existing in the firms can contribute to different stage of open innovation
implementation. As they are important
for innovation, this paper studies the specific capabilities that foster open
innovation. We direct attention toward understanding of the importance of
developing proper organizational practices and supporting mechanisms to foster
open innovation. The results indicate that the true difference between open
innovation adopters and non-adopters lie not in the intensity of adoption of
certain open innovation activities but in development of specific
organizational capabilities by establishing
supporting mechanisms on organizational level to facilitate the company
strategy towards opening up.
