Abstract

The goal of the project is to improve the competences of logistics SMEs in Kymenlaakso. More specifically, the project aims to enhance the management and organizing of work through knowledge management methods and practices. Indirectly the project also aims to create new business, new services and enhanced performance. The concrete goals of the project are: 1) to increase the understanding of knowledge management, 2) to create new management and innovation culture in target group, 3) to pilot practical knowledge management methods and tools in SME companies, 4) to improve well-being at work and to increase the productivity as well as 5) to create new research evidence about best practices of knowledge management as a performance driver in logistics.

Project activities consist of surveys, interviews, seminars, workshops, research publications and implementation of the pilot course of knowledge management in Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences.

New tools to assess knowledge management practices and digitalization degree of SMEs will be developed. The current level of the knowledge management practices and the digitalization degree of logistics companies in Kymenlaakso will be identified. Moreover, the most efficient knowledge management practices influencing the performance of SMEs will be defined. New procedures regarding three most critical knowledge management themes in logistics sector will be developed. The project produces 5 research publications, one knowledge management virtual training course (5 credit units), a video clip about knowledge management, and case articles.

Knowledge management has been investigated and applied successfully in large companies. This project brings practical knowledge management methods and tools into use of SMEs. The project also promotes peer learning. Companies will be given the chance to discuss and share their experiences of knowledge management in workshops. Also company presentations will be included in the agenda of seminars.

The evaluation methods developed during the project can be applied also to other branches in order to assess the performance and to improve the management of SMEs.

The project will be implemented between the 2nd of January, 2017 and the 31st of December, 2018 by Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences and Lappeenranta University of Technology. The budget is 193.156 € and the main financier is Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment in Häme (ESF).
