Biography
Professor Heikki Kälviäinen has been a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (CVPRL) of Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology LUT in Finland since 1999.
Currently Professor Kälviäinen is the head of CVPRL. Previously CVPR has been known as Machine Vision and Pattern Recognition Laboratory (MVPR) and the LUT University as Lappeenranta University of Technology. Currently CVPRL is being located at School of Engineering Science at LUT. Recently in 2015-2016 Prof. Kälviäinen has also been a Professor of Computing at Monash University in the Malaysian Campus where he served as a Deputy Head of School responsible for School of Information Technology. He received his M.Sc. degree and Ph.D. degree (Doctor of Technology) in Computer Science and Engineering in 1989 and 1994 from Department of Information Technology at LUT. Professor Kälviäinen has served in many academic leader positions, including a Vice Dean, a Deputy Head of School, and a Head of Department/Degree Program/Laboratory at LUT and a Director of East Finland Graduate School in Computer Science and Engineering (ECSE). He has established in the 90s the first international master degree program in Computer Science and Engineering in Finland with Professor Jussi Parkkinen and Professor Jan Voracek with six international partner universities. Professor Kälviäinen has been a Visiting Professor at Department of Computer Graphics and Multimedia (DCGM) of Brno University of Technology in 2012-2013 and 2017, at Center for Machine Perception (CMP) of Czech Technical University in Czech Republic in 2011-2013,and at Centre for Vision, Speech, and Signal Processing (CVSSP) of University of Surrey in the U.K. in 2001-2002 and 2003-2004. Professor Kälviäinen has supervised 26 doctoral and 153 master's theses, has written more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles (journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters), and 49 other research publications, and has been a responsible leader in 50 research projects (total 5.9 MEUR). Professor Kälviäinen's h-index is 30 with more than 4700 citations (Google Scholar). His primary research interests include machine vision, computer vision, pattern recognition, and digital image processing and analysis. Professor Kälviäinen has served as an Associate Editor of Machine Vision and Applications and Pattern Recognition Letters, and he belongs to the governing board of IAPR, being also a senior member of IEEE and SPIE, and a lifetime member of ACM and IAPR.
