Jarkko Levänen is assistant professor (tenure track) of sustainability science at Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology (LUT). He is responsible for Master’s Programme in Circular Economy at LUT Lahti Campus.

Jarkko’s research focuses on new socio-ecological models and sustainability management in the areas of circular economy and climate change mitigation. He’s interests include sectoral transitions, institutional changes and novel policy approaches in various socio-economic and cultural contexts from Arctic areas to the Global South. In empirical terms, Jarkko explores industrial symbioses, sustainable business and design models, new technologies and innovation processes. His largest ongoing research project focuses on circular economy of textile industry.

Previously Jarkko has studied inclusive forestry, distributed energy production, water management and novel housing solutions in developing countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. Jarkko has also studied organization of e-waste recycling in Latin America, risk governance of carbon capture and storage in Europe, potential for circulation-based industrial production in Scandinavia and the social implications of climate change in the Nordic peripheries. In his doctoral thesis (2015), Jarkko identified institutional obstacles of industrial recycling and proposed new ways for overcoming them.
