Biography
M.Sc. (Tech.) Antti Ahola is a junior researcher and PhD Candidate in the Laboratory of Steel Structures. His primary area of expertise is fatigue strength assessment of welded joints but he works also on the different topics related to welded steel structures. He currently works on a PhD project that focuses on the applicability of different approaches for the fatigue strength assessment of welded joints considering the different stress components. He tries to find efficient and adequate concepts that can be used in engineering.

Research Interest
Fatigue strength capacity of welded joints is an important design criterion in steel structures. Existing design codes and guidelines provide multiple stress- and fracture mechanics-based approaches to assess the fatigue life of a welded joint. Nevertheless, less has been paid attention to the applicability of these approaches in different load conditions. In addition, the design codes have been established for joints made of low or mild steel, and they can thus be outdated for novel high- (HSS) and ultra-high-strength steels (UHSS). His work elaborates on the applicability of the existing design methods in different joints and load conditions. The focus of the studies are on the welded joints made of UHSS since in order to exploit the full capacity of these materials, novel and accurate methods are particularly required.
